Intro
Still the boot of choice for skiers who don't want to compromise between downhill performance and excellent walkability on the uphill. Its downhill vocation means it shines on all kinds of snow, though with a preference for difficult conditions and chop, where a stiff, precise boot is called for. The GripWalk sole, also compatible with alpine bindings, holds up on more technical sections, providing just slightly less traction than a traditional touring sole.
Walking
The pivot point between cuff and shell is very low, around the same height as the ankle joint, for natural, friction free walking. Despite looking like an alpine boot, in ascent the range of motion is more than enough to take on big verticals and technical terrain. When bootpacking, the GripWalk sole has an abrupt shelf under the toe, which feels a little odd at first, but you soon get used to it and it remains solid even when climbing.
Lab
As soon as you've put it on it feels very tight, but heat molding the liner should provide just enough wiggle room for those wanting precision and performance. The Grilamid used in the cuff and shell provides incredible torsional rigidity and rearward support, while the Pebax tongue adds a touch of smoothness. Compared to a classic overlap design, the plastics are a little tricky to manage when putting it on. The forward lean is adjusted via the ski/walk mechanism.
Skiing
One for powerful skiers used to groomers and tight boots who want a lot of support. It sits very low to the ground, which gives considerable advantage off-piste, when the snow conditions change or when visibility is poor. The flex is stiff yet progressive; it won't bulge even with a race carver at your feet. The excellent rearward and lateral support is a great help, essential for those used to finding an edge and carving on compact snow. A piece of advice: get your usual size, don't worry if it seems a little tight, the liner adapts quickly, and you'll feel the difference when you're skiing.
