Intro
Scott's collection has been completely overhauled and streamlined, with four SEA models for freeride/all mountain and four new Explorair touring skis (including a women's model). We tested the 95, the widest in the series and the next generation of the iconic Superguide, much loved throughout the Alps. It features a classic shape, construction and graphic with paulonia and poplar core, carbon inserts throughout the entire length, and titanal underfoot. There's a subtle rocker and tapered tail to help release turns. A new skin notch at the tip is quick and easy to use.
On the snow
You can feel the Superglide's influence – the Explorair 95 still requires a good grounding in technique on the part of the skier, but is more accessible and suited to a wider public. This is a true one-quiver ski, one that holds up on all kinds of terrain without excelling anywhere. At slow speeds it lacks a little stability and precision, the shovel tends to chatter, but as soon as you hit the gas it becomes surprisingly manageable and precise on short and medium-radius turns. On particularly hard terrain it struggles a little, the waist twists and loses grip, but then it wasn't built for extreme conditions. Classic tourers who like a wide ski and aren't fixated on weight will find this an excellent companion throughout the season, even on multi-day traverses where you can find all kinds of conditions. It's well balanced in ascent and those few extra millimeters underfoot (compared to other Light skis) help set tracks in soft snow without compromising performance on technical terrain.
Lab
Slightly concave along the whole length, still not fixed after 10 passes through the machine. No structure or wax, rough finish. Thin edges, 1.45 x 2 mm at 89.3°; base bevel 1.2°. Protruding sidewall, edges sharp but uneven, needs tuning.
