Intro
Last year we tested the 94—a solid all-rounder. This year we went up a size and put the widest member of the TX family to the test: the 99. Straight up and down from tip to tail, like all Kästle skis, with a wood/carbon core sandwiched between two layers of fiberglass. The overall weight is well calibrated and in line with the competition, despite its burly size. Other models in the touring range include the TX UP, designed for durability and affordability, and the ZX line, a freeride crossover ski that's still light enough for some short uphills.
On the snow
The first thing that strikes you, as with all Kästle skis, is both the incredible attention to detail and the overall finish. The TX 99 is a classy ski, with classic geometry everywhere but the beefy, rockered shovel. Right from the first few turns you can feel it's not that kind of modern ski that's easy to handle though lacking in character; the TX 99 needs to be driven cleanly and confidently. Turn entry and release are helped along by the shovel and sidecut, but take speed and precision, otherwise the ski becomes sluggish and unresponsive. It floats well in soft snow and performs just as well on hardpack and chop where the edges have a lot of bite. The only downside in the latter case is the high rocker, which tends to chatter and can be a little unwieldy. Skiers with good technique and strong legs will enjoy its feistiness, but everyone else will probably find it a little hard to handle.
Lab
Tip not flat even after ten passes through the machine. Light structure, not much wax. Thin edges 1.8 x 1.55 mm at 88.7°, base bevel 1.2°. Considering how concave the base is and how thin the edges are it can't be tuned completely and needs a skilled ski tech.
