Intro
Making its debut this season, the Backland XTD is more like a light-touring boot on steroids than a classic tourer. It has a hybrid construction with no tongue and a gaiter that runs from the shell to the cuff to keep water and snow out. It has only two buckles plus the classic booster strap on the calf and a clean, minimalist design. The weight is just right for the category. Could this be the beginning of a new era for ski boots?
Walking
One of the best boots in its class, both for skinning and bootpacking. There is an almost excessive range of motion and zero friction between cuff and shell. As perfect for veteran ski tourers as it is difficult for newbies, who will find little support from the plastic. The classic Atomic ski/walk mechanism is back, the only downside being that it sticks out a little too much from the cuff. This is a boot suited to big verticals, to use with the lightest skis in their class.
Lab
Entry and exit are ridiculously easy, you almost don't need to use your hands. The shell volume is comfortable (it feels like more than the stated 100 mm last), perfect for big feet or anyone with a high instep. The areas around the ankle bones and calf, like the shell, are nice and roomy; this isn't the boot for anyone looking for a vice-like grip. The rivets can be changed at home for easy maintenance.
Skiing
Ideal for anyone used to a light-touring boot and having a certain amount of ankle movement even on the downhill, who can compensate for the lack of support from the plastic with muscle control. Once you have regulated your buckles, the foot and heel are held firmly in place—that said, don't pair it with skis that are too wide or powerful. If you do that the soft plastics and the structure of the boot won't hold up and the heel will move out of position. It offers good rearward support, which helps to recover your stance in case of mistakes; unfortunately, the forward and lateral support isn't great, especially on hardpack or variable snow conditions.
