Intro
Ubac is Zag's classic ski touring line. It's been refined and improved over the years, always with a focus on producing lightweight, easy to handle skis. The series runs from 89 to 112 mm underfoot; the 95 is the width recommended by the Chamonix-based ski maker for those who want one ski to use in all conditions. It has a classic shape, with a shallow rocker at the tip and tail, and a positive camber at the waist, core in paulownia with carbon and fiberglass stringers, phenol reinforcements at the mount point, and ABS cap-sidewall construction.
On the snow
Unbelievably light and thin, it's nicely balanced on the uphill, including kick turns and more technical sections—the ideal companion for long missions. Its low weight and svelte structure mean that aggressive carving doesn't come naturally, though if skied with a light touch it's easy and intuitive, predictable in its response, and not tiring. On crust and powder the shovel works very well as long as you ski the old-school way, with lots of vertical movement. It has excellent torsional rigidity for its weight and instills confidence on compact terrain, partly because it makes it so easy to initiate turns, beating most other skis in its category in this regard. However, it reaches its limit when being driven hard, both in terms of speed and terrain. It wasn't designed for extremes (if that's your thing then there are lots of alternatives out there) but as an intuitive ski for relaxed outings.
Lab
Concave throughout the length, almost flat after 10 runs through the machine. Medium structure applied fairly well, waxed. Reasonably good edges 1.8 x 1.7 mm at 88.9°, base edge 1.2°. Good finish, you could take it out as is. Shame about the concave base.
