Intro
Its weight caused us to keep this ski out of our tests in past seasons, but this year it's come charging back with a vengeance. Navis was updated before last winter and has become more playful and more versatile. It's maintained its alpine character with not much tip rocker, loads of camber so the edges contact the terrain, and a slight rise in the tail to make it manageable and easy to turn. With straight sidewalls, titanal underfoot, a mix of wood, carbon fiber and fiberglass, generous dimensions and tons of substance, this ski was designed to be used on all terrains, from open slopes and powder to tight, steep gorges.
On the snow
It's a hard, pure ski, so much so that it makes you bit nervous to take on the first turn. In actual fact, the work done on this new Navis has made it much more docile and intuitive. It's still a ski for die-hard skiers, but it's no longer limited to an elite few. The new tip geometry works well both in powder and in chop and crust. If you trust the tips to take your weight, the start of the turn comes a lot more easily. The ski gives you an extremely natural, fluid ride on all snow types. The size we tested works well in wide, fast turns, but a shorter model would be excellent for steep slopes and alpine terrain. There's lots of structure and edges that bite, so packed snow or ice aren't a problem, despite the width at the waist. You'll need endurance on the climb, since you'll feel the weight on longer ascents. And the 102 mm waist width doesn't help on hard traverses. Good technique is an absolute must.
