Intro
Quest'anno, all'interno della categoria Tour, troviamo alcuni modelli di nuova concezione che si collocano esattamente a metà tra il Light e il touring classico. Quantum Free has been one of the founding fathers of this family since 2021: just two buckles, a very streamlined design and no tongue. The shell is glued in two parts for maximum precision and reduced weight, the plastics are supportive and the liner has been revamped with more comfortable foam.
Walking
A superior-quality product, it wouldn't look at all out of place in the Light category. Aft opening of the ankle is greater than what a classic ski tourer could use with Tour equipment, and the absence of plastic on the shin makes for an almost effortless sensation when walking. The shell and cuff free of protruding buckles also make walking with crampons much easier. There's no risk of snagging them on rocks or bending buckle levers, making them also ideal for mountaineering missions.
Lab
Entry and exit are not the Quantum's strong points: the throat is quite tight and difficult to put on if you’ve got a high instep. Once on though, the boot volumes feel very comfortable. The wraparound top buckle is different from the usual ones but well designed and sits snugly against the side of the cuff, meaning there’s no risk of accidentally snagging it. Scarpetta con lacci e volumi ben bilanciati; il tallone ha un pò di vuoto, ma si corregge facilmente con la termoformatura.
Skiing
Despite the ‘free’ in the name, this is not an ideal boot for fast chargers or those seeking great downhill performance. The shin is too easily overpowered when driving the flex and to fully enjoy the down you need to dial back the speed, favor tighter turns and use the foot more for piloting. However rearward support is very good, a feature that will be appreciated in particular by old-schoolers, and during those backseat moments or when skiing with a heavy pack. Paired with skis around 90 mm in the center and not overly structured, it’s a perfect partner for long ascents and tourers not wanting heavy boots that are cumbersome on the skin track, yet not willing to compromise too much in descent.
