Intro
The Free models are the stiffest in the Quantum line. Despite the name, they are the closest in the range to a touring boot, adding two-three hundred grams (around half a pound) to the same shape but with a different last. The liners and closure systems are completely different. They do however retain the precise fit and have a similarly free ankle on the uphill. The top-of-the-line Pro model resembles the Quantum Free Asolo Factory 130 in all but name.
Walking
A superior boot, similar to the Evo, though here there is more synergy with the liner which is firmer and has a more pronounced tongue. This has less influence on the forward flexion, where it won't inconvenience even the fastest tourers, while the rearward support is more noticeable. For classic touring it offers phenomenal freedom of movement. The edge support is well-balanced.
Lab
Entry is pretty easy, seemingly more so than the Evo. The setup is different to its pure light-touring sibling, with the lower buckle connected to a cable and the top one reversed. In general, it's practical and intuitive, even with gloves on. The higher buckle, when open on the uphill, sticks out a little too much. The sporty, technical liner will suit lots of types of feet. The area above the heel might be a little roomy for narrow feet, but that is soon remedied with heat molding.
Skiing
The features and overall setup of the boot mean it feels different in descent compared to the Evo. The liner, which is very well put together with an elaborate tongue, is made from a robust, yet soft and comfortable foam while still being very supportive at the front. It works well with the hook strap which raises the fulcrum of the boot higher. The flex remains progressive and soft, ideal for stiff 80-90 skis, encroaching on the tour category. There's a lot of rearward support even if you sit back. On the edge it mostly holds up under pressure, loosening its grip slightly only at the end of the turn. The ski/walk transition can be activated by a safety cord so you can be certain it's closed. An intriguing light/tour hybrid.
