Imagine a slope that’s as wide as you need, steep at points, mellower at others, perfectly groomed in the middle but dotted at the sides with powder stashes or small moguls. Not too long, snow-sure thanks to the altitude, and served by a lightning-fast gondola. And to cap it off, next to the lift sits a four-star hotel with spa and gourmet restaurant. There’s no better place to put skis and boots through their paces. As when you have dozens of models to test, you need somewhere you can get plenty of runs in on piste. And where, when the lifts close in the spring, you can spend long days skinning up the slope. That place is the Ponte di Legno-Tonale ski area. The hotel is the Capanna Presena. Whether we’re testing a single category of equipment or the whole shebang, for years now our team has decamped to the Capanna at 2,753 m above sea level for days, or even weeks, of tests. Not to mention that this is a place that lives and breathes ski touring. There’s even a dedicated lift pass, valid for Passo Presena and the Valsozzine-Corno d’Aola chairlift, ideal for shortening the climb to the Pisgana off-piste area or venturing into the Pian di Neve and the furthest reaches of the Adamello area.
