Intro
The lightest boot in the Lange stable has undergone a dramatic overhaul, with steel cable buckles, plastic 5-tooth ladder and a brand-new liner, all to reduce weight. What remains are the clean lines (though a little bulky) and the overlap system that wraps your feet well in descent. The walk-mode connection point is very high up, and the stride is a little less natural compared to other boots in its class.
Walking
Much improved thanks to the thinner, softer liner, that however tends to bend around the heel. The limitations of the overlap system remain, especially the resistance that the ski/walk mechanism generates when moving. Not a boot for long uphills, but with the right rhythm it works for tours with verticals of 1,000 m or more (3,000+ feet), where the goal is a rewarding descent. Excellent compatibility with crampons and good for walking on difficult terrain despite its bulky shape.
Lab
It fits like a Lange: it's easier to put the liner on before the boot, so your foot slides in better. The volume is uniform throughout the boot, and it fits medium-sized feet well. The buckles on the shell are easy to close without using too much force; the two on the cuff easily arrive at the end of the ladder without the possibility to extend it. The Velcro was chosen for its light weight; for a top-of-the-line boot you'd expect a good booster strap. Effective ski/walk mechanism.
Skiing
The foot sits on a high bootboard that will make resort skiers feel right at home and generally helps all skiers when switching edges. That said, it lacks a little sensitivity and feeling with the terrain. It holds the foot firm, with a slight gap around the heel (probably due to the liner). The front flex is progressive and elastic, though not well supported, and it lacks lateral stiffness. We think a booster and a more robust liner would make this boot a real beast in descent, which is what most of us would expect from a brand like Lange. What is certain is that this XT3 is a good compromise between uphill capabilities, downhill performance, and comfort: everything a touring boot should be.
