Intro
The Pika is a glacier in Alaska, an awe-inspiring start point for some of the best remote descents. And that's the inspiration behind the Terra line, a women's collection that up to last season included just three freeride/all-mountain models. This year there are two new additions to the touring family: the 88 mm Biafo, and the more versatile 94 mm Pika. The materials and construction are identical, only the width changes. It sports Kästle's trademark Hollowtech tip, with fewer layers in the shovel it makes the ski more stable and enhances edge grip.
On the snow
This is undoubtedly a Kästle ski. One for the downhill, technical and precise. But don't let that put you off, it's not overly demanding and can be ridden by less experienced skiers. As long as you know how to drive it— there's no such thing as autopilot with this model. Incredibly agile and stable, it's a versatile ski for all types of terrain and snow conditions. Sweeping medium-to-wide turns on soft snow are where it shines, but it holds up on hardpack, even if it takes a little more work on the part of the skier. This is a good option for a one-ski quiver, for powder days, steep couloirs and committing terrain.
Lab
Concave at tip and tail, not flat after 10 runs through the machine. Reasonably well applied universal structure, waxed. Decent edges, 1.7 x 1.7 mm at 88,8°, base edge 1.2°. Lots of rust on the edges which are pretty uneven in terms of sharpness. Haphazard finish, needs retuning.
