Intro
Three seasons after the MTN 96's debut, Salomon has completely overhauled its leading skimo model. At a glance it might just look like a sleek new graphic (and a big improvement on the old one) but there have been a whole host of other changes. Here the focus is on sustainability, with a base made from 100% recycled materials, as well as part of the sidewall and internal structure. The geometry remains unchanged, wide and solid enough in descent, but also manageable enough for most tourers in ascent. A well-balanced, minimalist, no-frills ski.
On the snow
A ski for everyone. Nothing excessive or over the top, this model could almost be described as boring—in the very best sense of the word. And that's why it's the most well-balanced ski in the category. It just takes a few turns to get the hang of and find your rhythm. The classic construction has a well-proportioned, rockered tip that facilitates turn entry and provides stability on chop with a slightly raised tail for easy release. If we had to find a negative, like many in this category it tends to oversteer, but you soon get used to it. On hard or steep terrain the tail can flex and lose precision, but you can't expect pro-level performance from such a versatile ski. This is a ski that helps you improve, encouraging you to be more daring, while providing stability and float. Not the lightest in ascent, but the traditional shape helps in all conditions.
Lab
Slightly convex at the tip, flat after eight passes through the machine. Structure applied, very little wax. Very narrow edges 1.45 x 1.6 mm at 88.4°, base bevel 0.9°. Rough but ok finish. Needs a little work, but many could take it out on the snow as is.
