Intro
Zag's new Ubac collection is all about fun, ease of use, and the ability to take on all kinds of terrain. Over ten years on from the Ubac's launch, the collection has been completely revamped, with awesome new graphics, new shapes and new materials. The brand has tried to use raw materials mainly sourced from Europe, recycled where possible to lessen their environmental impact. The range runs from the 89 mm to the 108 mm, and the 95 and 102 are the most obvious contenders for this particular category. The 95 features a square tip, high yet progressive rocker, positive camber and is made from a mix of wood, carbon and titanal.
On the snow
This ski is all about versatility. Like many others in this category, it's a jack of all terrain, but master of none. And it's a lot different to the previous iteration. The 95 is easy to handle; if you find one around your height it's manageable on tight terrain, fun through the trees and a solid choice for trying out steeper slopes. The long shovel tends to chatter a little on chop and you'd be advised to go for a longer length if you like to ski fast. Turn entry is easy and it's smooth and predictable, though tends to oversteer when releasing due to the rocker and shape of the tip which can hook, especially on crust. A great choice for touring throughout the season, it helps out in ascent (excluding extreme terrain), as it's slightly lighter than average and nicely balanced during kick turns. If you're a powerful skier who loves to charge, take a look at its wider sibling, the 102.
Lab
Slightly concave at the tip while the waist and tail were already flat, all straightened out in ten passes. Messy structure, plenty of wax. Pretty good edges 1.9 x 1.7 mm at 89°, base bevel 1°. Edge sharpness fairly uneven; rough finish. Needs work before taking it out on the snow.
