Intro
Designed and built by ULL, a boutique ski maker based in Courmayeur at the foot of Mont Blanc. The brand offers two models: the 114 mm Bliss built for deep powder, and the 103 mm Glacialis. Available in two sizes—170 and 180 cm—this ski is an unusual shape, with a low cork tip, progressive rocker and plenty of positive camber. Here you'll find zero carbon, rather different types of wood to keep it stable and light where it counts, and a fiberglass coating.
On the snow
Two things immediately strike you about this ski: the unusual shape, with deep camber and super-G-style tip, and the high-quality construction with edges that are built to last. This is an innovative ski designed for expert skiers. For the first few turns you feel wrong-footed, the tip is so low it doesn't seem to want to break through the snow. But on the plus side there's zero chatter. To really get the best from the Glacialis you need to up the speed. Though it provides excellent grip on hardpack and chop, a sign of solid construction, this isn't the most agile ski. Same goes for tree runs and couloirs—the camber gets a little grabby and maneuvering to gain a little extra space requires a level of technique not everyone has. The weight is in line with the category and the shallow sidecut makes it suitable for ascending big verticals.
Lab
Slightly concave along the entire length, resolved by seven passes through the machine. Faint wave structure badly applied, same goes for the wax. Thin edges 1.55 x 1.75 mm at 89°, base bevel 1.2°. The edges are fine, if a little narrow. This ski is fine to go out on the snow as is, but grinding and structure recommended.
