Intro
The secret's out: the Radical Pro W is rightfully one of the most interesting boots from the firm with the snow leopard logo. Already award winners last season (Smart Choice), we couldn't help but test drive it again this year. And our feedback remains unchanged: it’s boot with a setup that’s a breeze to use (the Hoji Lock System), and skis well (thanks to the progressive flex of the Grilamid and fiberglass), which more than make up for the few extra grams you have to carry uphill.
Walking
Go tackle major ascents... providing you’ve got the legs for it. On the foot, it does tend to feel a little heavier than the best out there, but it's just a question of getting used to it. The cuff range and freedom of movement are what you would expect from a boot of this category. The padded liner doesn’t impede in hiking mode. Rather, it allows you to keep your foot securely placed even when sidehilling or performing kick turns on steep terrain and feels confident when donning crampons. The Pomoca rockered sole performs well.
Lab
Foot entry and exit feels virtually automatical. Once on, you have to pay a little attention to setting up the buckle system before leaving the trailhead, especially the one on the instep with plastic ratchet. But this is the secret to why, once you’ve dialed in your own set-up, the fit is so outstandingly good on descent. The Hoji Lock system, which simultaneously closes both cuff and ski/walk lever, takes a little to figure out, but works like a dream.
Skiing
When pointed downhill, this boot reveals its true character. Two words sum up this boot: aggressive and solid. Aggressive because the progressive flex combined with a high perceived flex index and excellent edge grip together favor a powerful, full-charging skiing style. Solid because the closure system provides setup customization that ensures first-rate downhill performance. We should add that this magic formula works especially well on medium- to high-volume feet, while the fit could feel a bit sloppy for those with narrower-volume feet, so good bootfitting is important. The padded, snug liner helps, providing great support for the shin and achilles tendon. The classic Dynafit plastic tongue adds rigidity and support, once all the buckles are tightened properly. A dynamic duo.
