Intro
This boot slipped under the radar when it was first released, likely sidelined by the latest lightweight discovery. This year though, now that low weight is not the only thing that counts, it has found its rightful place in the touring boot canon. The combination of Grilamid, fiberglass loaded Grilamid and the Hoji Lock system continues to work flawlessly. Pair it with the Radical 97, as recommended by Dynafit, and your setup is complete. It also comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Walking
On the whole it walks well for a boot in this category. The cuff rotation is not excessive, but enough to cover a decent amount of elevation gain, in the knowledge that a light tour boot would spend less energy. The heel stays firmly in place and the foot doesn't move around in the liner when skinning uphill; it provides support on steep, icy sections with crampons. The stride is good on the whole; the Pomoca sole gives you confidence even on technical terrain.
Lab
Simplicity is not the goal with this boot. Despite the ease of entry and exit, the buckles are tricky to regulate at first. At this point everyone knows the Hoji Lock system; flip it to close the ski/walk mechanism and cuff in one go, keeping the heel firmly locked in place. The boot is ever so slightly roomy, while the liner is comfortable but not too soft. Energy transmission is very effective.
Skiing
In descent this boot comes into its own; the progressive flex and the strong edge grip come as a pleasant surprise. The buckle closure keeps medium-volume feet in place, if your feet are narrow, they'll likely slop around a little at the front due to the relatively high boot volume. Once you find what works for you, the foot is locked in, and the Hoji Lock feels secure enough to let rip on steep slopes and powder. That said it still works well in tricky snow conditions, damping vibrations and maintaining solid support. The flex feels stiff, which on a boot like this is a dream come true.
