Intro
Every year, ATK carries out subtle tweaks to their builds, but in this case there’s been some very obvious changes, as the heel body now sits on a graduated slider track in metal instead of plastic. They’ve also added to their lineup, so this free-oriented binding now sits between the Raider 10/12 AP, the new 10/12 SL version and the Freeraider 15 Evo. So what's the difference (other than the weight)? The Evo now also features release value adjustment at the toe, and the automatic ski brake—options not available on the AP and SL (the latter also has a less beefy toe). The AP weighs 25 g less, the SL 40 g less. The Freeraider 15 has higher release values, and includes a toe shim and freeride spacer.
Fit
This is a fully-featured piece of kit in every sense, delivering top performance for absolutely all folks. The new aluminum heel Power Plate transmits impulses more cleanly. Easy to step into, both when centering and closing the jaws, and a nice mellow entry at the heel. Toe opening adjustment is a real game changer on this binding. Toe units with fixed release values guarantee an average release value, which performs best when the heel release adjustment also has an average setting. But with lower release values, the forces all tend to be concentrated on the front pins, while with higher settings, they're all at the heel. With dual adjustment, however, you always have the release values evenly balanced between the toe and heel.
