Intro
This offering optimizes the concept of the hybrid binding, with full pin uphill and full step-in downhill. A concentration of technology and design power, but an end result that's super-easy to use. Housing has been kept to a minimum, giving the impression of being somewhat naked. Transitioning the toe from pin for climbing to step-in for descent is performed manually, and really couldn’t be easier. Complete adjustment of the front and rear release values, along with a double spring in the adjustment plate which ensures really effective cushioning of the violent flexing experienced when landing jumps and powerful skiing. One very nice feature is the really low stand height.
Fit
On the mountain, it combines maximum ease of use, the lightest weight of the full step-in hybrids, and great precision in descent. The total rigidity of its one-hundred-percent metal construction is cushioned by the elastic action of the two springs under the heel. We're puzzled by the so-called flat walk mode, as this is actually -18 mm, and remains the same with any sole profile and ramp angle. This effectively means there's only one climbing aid, as the first (+10 mm) actually takes you to the real flat setting, so this is a Free binding created to accommodate boots with limited ROM. Also the multi-norm adaptation which uses spacers under the front adjustment plate is a bit fiddly, and the HY 13 Free is not compatible with all touring boots, so check before you buy.
