Intro
With the arrival of the Ski Trab TR1 hybrid model, there's a new kid in town to challenge the title of the Shift (a full step-in in descent) as leader of the freetouring world, which prioritizes downhill performance above all else. If you want to head up the skin track using a pin system, and hit the downhill in a step-in alpine binding that provides close contact with the ski, then the Shift—be it the Atomic, Salomon or Armada—is by far the best choice. Its efficiency leaves its closest rivals in the dust.
Fit
Pin on the way up, alpine on the way down. In walk mode, aligning the pins is easy thanks to the wide stopper at the tip of the toe piece, you can't go wrong. Other operations are just as easy, like the transition from ski to walk mode with the toe lever and the locking/unlocking of the brake using another lever on the heel piece. There's just one climbing aid, that works well with boots with limited ROM, and flat mode, which really lies flat against the ski. The ramp angle is nice and low, ideal for downhill performance as well as those with smaller feet. Transitions are as quick and painless as those of tech bindings with brake. No need to add or remove extra components like the Marker Duke PT toe-piece shell. While there is a notable difference in weight, it's not far off that of some of the burlier pin bindings and the Kingpin (a hybrid, like the TR1), and less than the Duke PT. Adjustable release settings also in the toe piece.
