Intro
A pro model designed for athletes of the caliber of Sammy Carlson; the weapon of choice for the gnarliest of newschoolers. A hefty boot, one of the heaviest in its category, that doesn't care about ascent/descent compromise and goes all in on downhill performance. Aside from a new look, it's remained unchanged for the last few seasons; a solid three-piece cabrio construction with three buckles, ideal for young skiers for a mix of resort and short uphills.
Walking
It's like putting on a pair of slippers. For those in need of lots of volume, this is an incredibly comfortable boot, but the 102 mm last doesn't offer much in the way of support for slimmer feet. The removable tongue allows for plenty of movement to the fore, much less to the aft; removing and reattaching it during transitions is overly complicated. Using it on the uphill can be justified for specific objectives like big mountain lines or sending backcountry airs. Or, of course, brief ascents.
Lab
Three burly, and fairly unwieldy, buckles, topped off with a robust, well-made power strap. Scarpetta Intuition Wrap, molto rigida e performante, chiusura a laccio singolo (poco funzionale). The buckle ladders have a tour hook for the ascent; you need to remove the tongue to keep the weight and friction down. A sturdy rubber midsole provides excellent protection under the arch of the foot. The ski/walk mechanism is easy to lock, trickier to open. Anti-scratch shell.
Skiing
For those used to a classic overlap boot, it takes a little getting used to. The cabrio design offers incredible support in the cuff, letting you use your shins more and your ankles less. On the other hand it's less laterally precise and doesn't provide the aggressive edge bite that other models do. But there's zero torsion and it withstands all kinds of big mountain usage like heavy fat skis, ripping uneven terrain, and landing huge cliff jumps, trees and kickers. It's more suited to North American-style slashing and buttering; sending tricks doesn't cause pressure points on the feet. It doesn't transmit a great deal of pop on tight turns, preferring to provide support on wide arcs and straight lines.
