Intro
A brand-new model that takes the place of the old 112, this is the widest offering in the Ubac line. Designed for freetouring, this year it's sporting a new shape and construction. The relatively low weight and fat width can mean only one thing: this ski was built for climbing and floating through deep powder. The generous rocker—40% at the tip and 30% at the tail—means there's little effective edge.
On the snow
This is one lightweight fat ski, providing plenty of lift and float in deep powder. It's playful and intuitive on soft terrain, where it feels most at home. On hardpack and chopped up crust, however, the nose chatters excessively, especially at high speeds or when skied energetically by a powerful skier, so best to take it down a gear. The Ubac 108 helps turn entry and moving from edge to edge, helping anyone new to freeride to progress, even at slower speeds. Ideal for powder days and undaunted by long ascents, it works best with a pin binding, though you could mount something sturdier for more of a freeride feel. Tip and tail may be rockered, but this remains an old-school ski, suited to classic tourers branching out into freeride.
Lab
Base concave throughout the length of the ski. Mediocre wave structure, lots of wax. Good edges 2 x 2.1 mm at 89.8°, base bevel 1.2°. The sharpness of the edges needs attention and excess sidewall needs removing. Large retailers might sell this without tuning.
