Intro
Since last season the new LT version of the K2 Diverge has catered to freeriders looking for a soft, lightweight boot; somewhere between the Sammy Carlson Pro model and the basic 100 flex model. The result is a boot suited to a wide range of good skiers for a variety of uses: mainly in-resort, but also anything from pure freeride to freestyling in the backcountry or snowpark and medium-length tours.
Walking
Entry is surprisingly easy and exceedingly comfortable; there is too much space around the forefoot for narrow feet. The removable tongue makes the boot lighter in ascent and increases ankle mobility, though this unfortunately remains limited by the back edge of the shell. The Michelin sole is a little unstable on rocks and slippery alpine terrain. Suitable mainly for resort use, or verticals of around 500 m (around 1,500 feet).
Lab
There are three micro-adjust buckles that support the forefoot, instep and shin, with the bottom buckle flipped around to avoid unwanted contact. Large buckles that are easy to adjust on the whole, except the one over the instep which is a little tricky with gloves. The liner is no longer an overlap, which will suit traditionalists. The ski/walk lever is easy to use, while the Velcro strap used on this version is very thin and not very progressive. A GripWalk outsole protects the shell under the arch.
Skiing
The forward lean takes a little getting used to, though in general it facilitates entry into turns as well as a central stance: practice makes perfect. Excellent rebound coming out of a turn, though it could be a little more agile when changing edge and provide a more precise grip on the snow. A multi-use boot, it is a strong candidate for a one-boot quiver for lots of skiers, not just the younger ones. The vintage look will appeal to traditionalists, as will the high volume, which ensures comfort even on long winter days. Not ideal for riding groomers, the lack of precision leaves room for more creativity.
