Intro
Völkl's longstanding Mantra collection has always been about directional skiing and stiff flex; the essence of a giant slalom ski, but adapted and developed for freeride. The line boasts several distinctive features, starting with the flat tail and ever-so-slightly rockered nose, which together with a heavy dose of titanal make every model in the range a high-performance machine. Three different sidecut profiles optimize stability at speed and aid float in deep powder. After remaining unchanged for a few seasons, this year the Mantra 102 gets a fresh new look.
On the snow
An all-mountain ski in spirit, the Mantra 102 is in the Free category thanks to its width, but is to all intents and purposes a resort ski for skilled riders. The only option here is alpine bindings, there's no point in mounting a hybrid as this is not a ski for powder or soft snow. Super stable on hardpack and chop, this is a stiff, powerful weapon reserved for excellent skiers looking for a dependable ride. Ideal for ski instructors looking for an everyday ski or for anyone coming from an alpine racing background who wants the stiffest model possible. The even flex pattern is suited to riders who can get a firm grip on the snow by laying over their skis and make the most of their precision. No sitting back allowed; the flat tail is pretty unforgiving, but does help skiers who know how to lean on it in the right way. Great for expert skiers who are middle-aged and older, less so for younger riders.
Lab
Very concave, especially at the tip, almost flat after ten passes through the machine. No structure, just ground with a little wax. Reasonably good edges 2.2 x 2.1 mm at 89°, base bevel 1°. Lots of rust and burrs. Lots of gouges in the base, needs full tuning.
