Intro
The heir to the TR2 is finally here and it promises to be a game changer for freeriding and steep ascents. Unlike its predecessor it doesn't require a heel adapter and the front pins are also universal. The main differences are in the heel piece, which harks back to the first prototype (that's why it's called the TR1), but made with materials that have become lighter in the intervening decade. The stand height is low (26 mm) and the weight is lower than hybrid/step-in rivals, but with a more robust construction using durable metal components and carbon-reinforced polymers.
Fit
To attach the pins, press the lever on the toe piece down (easier with a pole than with gloves) and release it when the pins are lined up. To activate ski mode, use a pole to push back the riser plate that also acts as a second climbing aid when flipped forward (the first is 6°, over the heel clamp): this unlocks the brake. To lock it just push down the metal clamp with pole or boot and then press the brake. The transition from walk to ski mode in the heel piece is a real advantage when side-stepping uphill and on technical sections in ascent, where you can leave the toe piece unlocked thanks to the incremental clamping force; useful on steep slopes where avalanche risk is high. On the downhill it skis like an alpine binding. A real game changer.
