Intro
This is the second iteration of the TR2, which was released last season. In terms of functionality and use, it’s a sophisticated hybrid model that’s been eagerly awaited by freeriders who like to ski steep, challenging lines. Unlike its predecessor it doesn't require a heel adapter and the front pins are also universal. They’ve called it the TR1 because the heel re-employs the concept used in the original prototype, but with lighter materials. It compares to the Shift, Kingpin and Tecton and makes extensive use of durable metal parts and loaded polymers while remaining light for its class.
Fit
The real sweet feature is the heel mechanism for switching from walk to ski mode, which makes it great for side-stepping and tackling technical terrain during ascents. Plus, the incremental clamping force means you don’t need to lock the toe while touring—useful when traversing slopes where there's avalanche risk. In practice, you engage ski mode by simply pushing down with your pole on the rear lever, which, when folded forward, also functions as a second heel riser (the first riser is at 6°, on top of the step-in jaw). To park the brake, simply push down on the metal fork of the step-in mech with your pole or boot and then press down the brake mech. To step into the pins, you press down on the large front lever and release it after centering the boot on the pins. Your boot sits close to the ski, and the setup feels robust and precise—almost like an alpine binding.
