Intro
These came out in America last winter to great media fanfare, thanks to the name of one of the brand's founders, Bode Miller. Not available in stores, you can only buy them via their website. These robust skis have lots of metal, Paulownia and ash at their core, sandwiched between two layers of titanal. They're intentionally heavy, at nearly 2 kilos for the 184 cm version, to keep the construction stable at high speeds, while keeping vibration to a minimum. There is also a 98 SC version, which has the same shape but is lighter and has a softer flex.
On the snow
We got a good setup with a hybrid binding and nice firm boot, almost freeride style, for an all-rounder resort ski. If you buy this, you'll need another, lighter ski in your quiver for the ascent. The Peak 98 could be the right choice for those days when the climbs are short and not very technical, but the descents are long with a wide range of snow conditions. The wide tip with loads of rocker is a bit twitchy and performs best in powdery or springtime snow. But the ski's feisty nature doesn't mesh well with easygoing skiers, let alone those with technical deficiencies. The tail is very responsive, and if you lean back, it'll shoot you straight towards the steepest slope. But if you're in control, the response at the end of the turn is worthy of a resort ski. Lovers of wide turns will want a longer version to offset the tip rocker and lack of edge contact.
Lab
Concave at the tip (not totally corrected after 8 runs through the machine) and towards the tail (irregular). No structure or wax. Good edges, 1.8 x 1.6 mm at 89°, base edge 1.5°. Edge removed well at tip and tail, not much finish, good idea to tune.
