Intro
Armada's freetouring series turns two, having brought some much-needed lightness to the American brand's product catalog. The winner of last year's test, the Locator 104 is an all-terrain touring ski suited for frequent outings on all types of snow that will never let you down in a tight spot. It's not a ski built for straight lining at full throttle, preferring instead a more sophisticated use by technical skiers who prefer to finesse delicate curves, rather than dominate with brute force. Mount a pin binding to take full advantage of this ski.
On the snow
It truly has a lot of great qualities and very few defects. This all-terrain ski is a great choice for a wide range of skiers, from beginners to skimo experts. We were pleasantly surprised by its excellent performance on all terrain types and varied situations. That's not to be taken for granted in a ski that's one of the lightest in its class. Perfect for huge ascents, despite not having one of the narrowest waist widths. The responsive edges bite and give excellent grip on hard snow and groomers, conferring progressive flex when exiting tight turns, a crucial consideration when tackling steep couloirs. It floats nicely and the nose staying up even in deep snow, and responds obediently to the skier's commands.
Lab
Slightly concave at tip and tail; no structure, only smoothed; waxed. Edges 1.7 x 1.8 mm at 89°, base edge 1°, finish good overall, edge rather blunt at tip. Needs tuning, best conducted after a couple of outings to break them in.
