Intro
Part of Ogso's Exalted Solid Tour lineup, this ski has been designed for freeride touring enthusiasts seeking a do-it-all lightweight ski that can tackle enormously varied conditions and demanding ascents. In common with many manufacturers producing similar skis, the build uses a blended poplar-and-paulownia core encased in glass fiber. The layup also includes a basalt, carbon and aramid layer to reduce chatter. A modern shape with a generous rocker and great feeling of flotation. More moderate at the tail, and reduced camber and edge contact to enhance handling and maneuverability.

On the snow
The geometric lines tend to suggest these are thoroughbred new-school tools. In reality, after a few turns the rather more classic rearward mount point is immediately evident. This allows for a more centered stance to enhance float. The nose can be seen riding up out of powder, which will help less proficient skiers turn off piste. It sometimes tends to oversteer, creating the classic 'blocking' sensation. Decidedly more congenial in soft terrain. In firm snow and hardpack the tip tends to chatter excessively while it lets you crank up the speed when driving big turns in softer snow. It's more sluggish through short-radius turn, and lacks the pop necessary on exiting turns to drive into successive turns. With performance a halfway house between traditional and modern style, it's a ski that will appeal to transitioning ski tourers and improving freeriders seeking to move into the realm of fat skis.

Lab
Very concave at tip and tail, not fixed after 10 runs through the tuning machine. Failed attempt to apply structure, not waxed. Good edges, 1.8 x 1.9 mm at 89°, base edge 1.1°. Basic finishing needs work. Irregular edge set. Needs tuning.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.
