Intro
Phaenom is Faction’s newly-founded sister company which debuted in freeskiing in 2023 with cutting-edge boots created by pro riders for modern freeskiers. They use an interesting cabrio-overlap hybrid construction which offers great movement and support. Minimalist styling: one buckle on the shell, one on the cuff and a powerband with a new fastening system that provides progressive flex. 100% recyclable, low-energy circular production.

Walking
Very easy entry achieved by pulling apart the plastic wings but a bit tricky to reposition them and close the first buckle. Uniform closure, hugs the calf well, very generous fit, especially around the forefoot. Excellent rearward flex, more limited forward flex, hindered somewhat by the cuff wings and buckles, but still good walkability for a freeride boot. The booster-style strap is awkward to use in hike mode as it tends to loosen and won’t stay put.
Lab
Two super-wide micro-adjustable buckles, rubberized booster band with innovative buckle: cinches up tight when closing, but slightly fiddly to release. Solid ski/walk lever with release cord, shell features alpine-boot-style malleolus canting. Well-crafted liner with supportive padding suitable for freeskiing, plus the option to add laces for use when touring. GripWalk multi-norm sole, no arch reinforcement.
Skiing
At its heart this is a boot for freeskiers, developed specifically with younger riders in mind who prioritize downhill performance, possibly with some jumps. If you’re after a boot for jibbing, backcountry freestyle and big mountain freeride these are probably the most specific and versatile in their class. Although still in its infancy, this project is bringing some great new innovations to the sector. Depending on your foot shape, you may find you get greater or lesser lateral precision. That said, edge hold is not as aggressive as pure overlaps, but power transmission is enhanced when using XL skis.
