Intro
Faithful to the original, the shape of the new Solis remains truly distinctive and unique. It sports a straight sidewall to reduce lateral torsion, lots of progressive tip rocker, a completely flat camber and tapered tail for easy pivoting. It comes in only two sizes, 173 and 180 cm, both weighing in at the limits of their class. It's a nearly straight ski with a sidecut at a full 25 meters, bucking market trends for skis that turn practically just by thinking about it. A stiff ski with lots of edge and thick sidewalls, it's designed to be ridden hard.
On the snow
The Solis is a ski designed for steep gradients. That's how Black Crows sells it at least, but we think it's a little reductive. Beyond steep slopes, where the ski definitely excels, we found it easy and intuitive on all slopes and snow conditions, so long as you keep the speed down. It turns super easy with its flat camber, both in tight spaces and when widening your turn radius a bit with some slarving. The tip stays up out of the snow for added confidence, and the tail gives good support, even with a heavy pack, but you do need a good central stance. It starts to suffer a bit when you increase speed and want to carve more on your edges, since the wide sidecut radius tends to make the ski go straight and the tip rocker gets twitchy. On the ascent, it performs well thanks to its stiffness and sidecut, but you feel the ski's weight right away.
Lab
Nearly flat. Sanded and waxed. Decent edges 1.5 x 1.8 mm at 88.5°, base edge 1.2°. Finish is just about right, edge a bit aggressive, sidewall juts out a bit. Tuning recommended, but not much needed to take it out.
