Intro
Slap is Zag's ski for freeride touring. It has multiple objectives, all centered around uniting the sort of skiability traits needed for backcountry skiing with the light weighted required for the ascent. The 104 is positioned at exactly the midpoint in the series and is again one of the most versatile waist widths for freeriding. They feature a mix of Paulownia and poplar at its core, giving the skis both their light weight and their durability, sandwiched in sheets of multiaxial fiberglass to control flex and torsional stiffness.
On the snow
The ski gives a good sensation right from the start, with uniform, intuitive performance throughout the turn. The stiffer flex at the waist works in sync with the softer tip for just the right flex when loading up the turn. Its docile shape forgives the sorts of mistakes made by less experienced skiers and helps to enter and exit the turn. It also floats great in deep snow. Turning is always easy, almost too easy on crust and other aggressive snow, which tends to bend the nose too much, especially on pivot turns, bringing your momentum to an abrupt halt. Despite the raised tail, it remains a more traditional ski suited to an old-school technique more than to the more aggressive new-school styles. It holds its own on hard terrain at intermediate speeds, but it's no big-mountain snow plow for fast, straight lines. It's suited to a wide range of talented skiers who don't mind a bit of climbing for some sidecountry fun.
