Intro
The narrowest model in the Pagoda Tour line, designed for big verticals and lots of transitions over the course of a day. Over the years the American skimaker has largely abandoned carbon in favor of wood, but the aim of the Pagoda series is to keep the weight down. Here we find two layers of carbon that wrap a wood core, and reinforced foam around the mounting point; the weight is right at the lower end of the category. Its distinguishing feature—the deep rocker and wide tip—remains, but there's also a nice amount of camber for grip and responsiveness on hard terrain.
On the snow
First impression off the snow is of a very stiff, very light, responsive ski. You'd think it would be twitchy and difficult to manage, but DPS have managed to strike the right balance in terms of downhill performance. At low speeds its docile nature aids less confident skiers without strong technique. Short turns are intuitive with good edge grip. The rocker is too deep; if on the one hand it increases confidence in more uncertain skiers and those who always want to be able to see the tip on the surface of the snow, on the other there's a lot of chatter and you're forced to keep the speed down. At high speeds it becomes loose and twitchy and it's obvious that you need to go easy on the edge when carving on hard terrain. Despite it being the most Alpine-oriented ski in the collection, its decidedly North American, for soft, deep snow, where it undoubtedly shines, despite its slim shape.
Lab
Almost completely flat; structure not great, but there; little wax. Good edges 1.8 x 1.8 mm at 90.5°, base edge 1.8° (excessive). Nice finish, many skiers could take it out on the snow as it, but better to wax and detune.
