Intro
The second generation Skorpius, launched last year, added the BOA closure system on the shell. Together with the Solar II and its women's counterpart the Stellar II, it's part of the touring boot range from La Sportiva, that comes above the Stratos VI and Raceborg II race models, and below the Vanguard and Vega, the Italian brand's freetour boots. The main difference with the Solar II is the use of carbon loaded Bio-Based Pebax Rnew, rather than just Pebax Rnew.
Walking
It walks well, in line with the average boot in this category. The unique ski/walk mechanism uses a swing lock system; once you get used to it, it's practical and user friendly. There is lots of space for the forefoot and it lets you get purchase when pushing off—ideal for anyone looking for natural sensation, even with their foot encased in plastic. The liner doesn't have an accordion-style crease at the back of the ankle, nonetheless it provides the right amount of freedom of movement, letting the ankle flex while supporting it.
Lab
Entry/exit and removing/putting back the liner are a breeze, and you can regulate the various mechanisms wearing thick gloves in the middle of a blizzard. Put it on, close it up and set off. The BOA, with lace guards on the shell exterior, closes pretty uniformly, with a precision suited to the level of skier this boot is aimed at. Comfort prevails.
Skiing
A nice mix of comfort and performance. The former gets the upper hand, but there's more of a balance between the two compared to competitors like the S/Lab Mountain Summit or the TLT X. The flex is progressive, never abrupt. It offers enough support, drive and edge to control light, skinny skis and satisfy the average intermediate skier. The comfort and the space around the forefoot are just right, more so than in similar boots in this category, and power transfer to the ski edges is adequate. While the Vanguard is able to drive more substantial skis and push limits, the Skorpius lets you scoot uphill and glide back down again on Light skis. It's not surprising that it's the boot of choice for many LaSpo pros.
