Intro
As spring conditions become more common throughout the season, we need a ski able to handle the most extreme terrain as well as instill confidence when charging hard on the downhill. The MTN Carbon is not for everyone; it requires a skilled skier who knows how to drive it to get the best from it. Pros and avid ski tourers will appreciate this ski. Some may find the carbon construction stiff, but for the right skier this is far from being a problem.
On the snow
On the snow, our testers were a little taken back by the length of the ski. Most thought a shorter length of 172cm would be more responsive and versatile in the mountains. When on edge, the ski held throughout the turn but would feel a bit chattery if you released the pressure, though according to the testers this could have been due to the 180cm length. We found this ski really came into its own on medium-to-large radius turns, where you could almost feel the construction of the ski at work — stiff, playful and progressive. For an 80(ish) mm ski it floated well in 25cm of fresh snow, but the MTN 86 Carbon really shines when conditions are a bit firmer. Noticeably light on the uphill, it doesn’t weigh you down during bootpacking sections. As we got to know this ski better, we found some similarities to previous Salomon models, but it really stood out by taking on tiring descents with ease, saving our energy for the next climb.
