Intro
È la versione senza gambetto in carbonio del Backland Carbon, provato nella Buyer's Guide 2024. It otherwise shares the same carbon-loaded polyamide shell, as well as the same volume, last, liner and closure system, though the liner doesn't come with additional spoiler. Atomic's stated flex for this boot is 100, compared with the Carbon's 110, and the difference in weight is under 10 g, so it feels very similar on the downhill.
Walking
As with the rest of the Backland clan, the space around the midfoot lets it splay properly, for a more natural stride. The friction-free cuff mobility also lets you leave the ski/walk mechanism in walk and close the top buckle where necessary. Definitely one of the best in its category, for agility on big verticals.
Lab
Entry is a breeze, and the fit is particularly roomy in the forefoot, especially in terms of height. I volumi ampi, che lasciano agio a dita problematiche e piacciono ai freddolosi, sono da ridurre almeno un po' - soprattutto su piedi magri e anche normali - con gli spessori. The heel pocket would also benefit from a good heat molding. The lower buckle operates a Z-cable closure system, while the 40 mm cam strap has a metal fastener that's easy to open and close.
Skiing
The rear support holds up, even when paired with a burly-ish ski, though it lacks the power to drive them; it does find it eventually but has a tendency to collapse. It works fine on skis weighing around a kilo, and finds the edge until the foot tenses up to compensate for the play in the boot. The foam of the liner works well when flexing, but over time tends to lose air, increasing the volume even more. It's comfortable and perfect for most people, but don't size up. With a boot like this you can't expect super precise control and responsiveness, but then at the shop everyone always asks for a comfortable boot.
