Intro
Scarpa's ski touring range is one of the most extensive out there; at first glance there may seem to be little difference between the models, especially the sizeable F1 family (which has grown further this year with the addition of the new SE). The F1 XT differs from the GT in the plastics, using Grilamid reinforced with long carbon fiber (instead of long glass fiber) for the cuff, and the same Grilamid Fiberglass LFT for the shell, making it suited to even more demanding skiers.
Walking
The cuff rotation (25° fore and 47° aft) is identical to that of the GT and LT, but you can feel a little more support around the calf and ankle, without compromising freedom of movement, which could prove to be helpful on technical traverses. For the sake of comparison, it has a more limited range of motion than Tecnica's Zero G Peak. The fit is very snug around the foot, even before you fasten the shell buckle. Don't be under any illusions that the Intuition liner will give over time and increase the volume.
Lab
You can tell just by looking at it that the volume is on the low side, and that entry won't be as easy as with a four-buckle overlap boot. However, if you tip the cuff back fully, it's easier than you'd think, considering we're talking about a Light boot. The closed-cell foam of the Intuition liner is solid and precise, with extra support where needed, and famously retains its shape over time.
Skiing
It's basically an even more technical GT, even if the differences are only really noticeable when pushed to the limit by powerful skiers or aggressive skiing. Those less sensitive to these differences will mainly notice the different closure, which has a top strap with cam buckle (as opposed to the Velcro power strap on the GT), providing a firmer hold. It offers unbeatable precision thanks not just to the plastics and closure system, but above all the super snug fit around the foot (if you're looking for the skiing equivalent of a carpet slipper, keep moving) and firm heel hold that truly demanding skiers will appreciate. It's only comfortable if you have healthy feet and don't give in to the temptation to size up.
