Intro
Backland is Atomic's large touring collection, with boots that run the (pretty broad) gamut from Light to Freetouring. The UL belongs in the former category; weighing in at 929 g (just over 2 lbs.) it's the lightest boot in the range. The women's model has a PA cuff, not carbon fiber like its male counterpart, and a softer stated flex.
Walking
The UL is a girl's best friend, if said girl loves to charge uphill. Comfortable, responsive and effective, it has an astonishing amount of cuff rotation, for a smooth, fast stride. The ultra-low weight means you can barely feel it, which is all the encouragement you need to put your foot down and tear up the mountain. The comfortable fit makes it perfect for fitness touring or long uphills, facilitating a natural gait.
Lab
Getting the boot on and off is easy thanks to the soft liner and streamlined shape of the shell. The fit is generous and comfortable as we've come to expect from Atomic, with a little play around the heel to fix with a boot fitting. The closure system is incredibly easy to use, with a buckle strap on the cuff and BOA dial on the shell that uniformly wraps the foot all the way to the toe box, where it leaves a little wiggle room. It makes life easy.
Skiing
If the ascent is where it shines, on the downhill it does what it can. Its lightweight comfort lets it down in terms of precision and flex, and the buckle strap, partly due to its low placement, provides little support when driving hard. That said the plastics provide a more progressive flex, without suddenly giving way. It supports smooth, controlled movements, and the BOA leaves just the right amount of space around the toes, which is a plus for the average intermediate. This could be a good option for those new to ski touring, and as easy and intuitive as it is, could even work as a race boot for skiers in the middle of the pack. Alternatively, it would suit more experienced tourers keen to clock up vertical without tiring, and take it easy on the descent.
