Intro
A new addition to the MTN line, sharing the same shape as the top of the range S/Lab MTN Summit, but with a cuff made from recycled polyurethane rather than Ultramid, while the BOA is replaced with a normal buckle and there is no second power strap at the top of the cuff. The liner is also different.
Walking
Free and easy with excellent range of movement. It aids the forefoot during the stride, letting the toes splay and then push off. The heel is held reasonably firmly, but the buckle closes just in front of the instep and doesn't hold it perfectly still. The robust S/Lab liner causes no issues: it's ideal for dedicated uphillers. Very few will notice a difference.
Lab
It's easy to put on, your foot just slides in. Same goes for taking it off. The fit is more snug around the midfoot and heel, but there's a good amount of space around the toes (which will make a lot of people very happy), while still giving them some support. The buckles are easy to handle and regulate, and the ski/walk mechanism has a little tab which is pulled sideways and works faultlessly.
Skiing
Softer than the S/Lab, which is nonetheless a flexible boot with wide appeal, but on this model you can feel the plastics bulge more, even if it is progressive. This is probably down to the lack of a second power strap to add extra support at the top of the boot. The heel also moves around more without a proper fitting (which we always recommend even if it seems fine as it is) to maximize efficiency and comfort. The difference is likely due to S/Lab's BOA system, not used on this model, which distributes a more uniform pressure, keeping the cable-lace (and consequently the touring belt at 45° above the instep) taught. It's a good compromise where comfort comes out on top (even the liner has a thicker, softer foam), but the power transmission, drive and rear support are all there.
