Intro
Making its debut last season, this is Salomon's top of the range ski touring boot, with BOA fit system, double power strap and lightweight liner, as well as a sole made from partially recycled material. The spine of the cuff is made from fiberglass and the lateral ski/walk mechanism is discreet yet easy to use.
Walking
Great. Frictionless forward flexion and good range of motion to the rear. The BOA keeps the heel almost completely in place even without a fitting and is more effective than the buckle on the Sport model. The midfoot is well supported, without feeling restricted, while there's enough space in the toebox to spread your toes while walking. Perfect for anyone who loves a long ascent.
Lab
Despite the lighter boot liner and the firmer foam used by its sibling MTN Summit Sport, it's just as easy to slide on and off. The interior is similar to the Sport, but the closure is different: it uses a BOA dial with cable laces and external lace guides which is pleasingly more uniform, with a 45° touring belt over the instep that keeps the heel firmly locked in place.
Skiing
Sometimes just a few details can make a big difference. The first is the BOA closure system, one of the best uses of the famous dial with well-positioned lace guides and the touring belt at 45° over the instep controlled by the BOA that keeps the heel in place. The second is the extra power strap high up on the cuff that provides extra support. The result is improved skiability, without sacrificing comfort, making the S/Lab MTN summit a great all-rounder that has your back on easy to medium-difficulty routes. The dense foam of the liner is responsive yet comfortable. The flex is well balanced, within fairly soft parameters. Flexibility and finesse.
