MTN 91 Carbon

TESTED 2023
Soft and easy to ride, it's one of the most fun on soft terrain and fresh snow, but it's not bad on the rest of the mountain either
In brief
Suitable for
all-terrain with a preference for softer surfaces
Not suitable for
high speeds and big mountain skiing
Also suitable for

    Intro
A new entry to the MTN Carbon line, this ski closes the gap between the 86 and 96. The narrower 80 completes the family. It shares the construction materials of its siblings, including the carob wood core, as well as the sidewall cap construction of the 96. Its modern geometry features a waist width that's just about perfect for a modern, lightweight ski. It weighs in at the high end of its class for enhanced skiability.

    On the snow
Like other skis of similar width, this ski's greater versatility and adaptability comes out best with a modern ski style, placing it firmly in the vast camp of skis with waists in the 88 to 91 mm range. Oddly, it's the only one with a 91 mm waist, but there's not much practical difference from an 88 or 89. It enters the turn more easily than an 80 and similar to an 86, and exits and transitions just as easily. It has a light tip that floats well in fresh powder and on soft terrain, where it feels most at home. But that also makes it a bit touchy at high speeds or on packed snow, where you need good feel over the center of the ski. It's more versatile and easier to ride than the somewhat different 80, and is perfect for tracing fun, tight or intermediate turns on a snowy day or on softer terrain. But this versatile ski is great for a broad range of users and use cases.

    Lab
Flat at the waist and tail, concave at the tip. Worn structure, limited wax. Decent edges 1.4 x 1.6 mm at 90°, base edge 1.5°. A bit of phenolic sidewall on the edges, too much edge at the tail. Needs a little bit of tuning before hitting the snow.
