Intro
If the Backland Carbon UL, tested in this same category, belongs in the segment that the Austrian brand calls Fast & Light; then the Backland Carbon, which uses the same cuff/shell materials and last, but two buckles and a Cross Lace closure system instead of a BOA and Velcro strap, and weighs 150 g (5 oz) more, is a more downhill-oriented boot.
Walking
The liner is stiffer and more padded than in the UL. They are very similar in terms of range of motion when walking, but the stiffer liner offers more support. A nice combination that prioritizes comfort without too many compromises if you want to kick things up a notch. The cuff rotation also lets you leave the cuff closed and the ski/walk mechanism open, useful in some situations when using crampons.
Lab
Entry is easy, as with the UL, and the setup is quick and efficient—even with gloves—though slightly less so than the UL, which is more user friendly thanks to having one less buckle and a simpler configuration. This boot also prioritizes comfort, but it can be shaped to your foot with heat molding. The liner is super comfortable, but the foam doesn't give too much and the semi-stiff parts on the leg and shin provide support in descent.
Skiing
Compared to the UL the closure is more localized to the lower shell and wraps the forefoot less, despite the positioning of the lace guides. The double closure on the cuff is more effective. Even closing it as tight as possible, you don't feel much difference: so don't size up, it should wrap the foot well before making adjustments. The space is mainly around the forefoot, where a thorough heat molding will adapt to most feet to create a fully personalized fit. It is supportive on edge and prevents sitting back, but compared to its competitors there's less sensitivity in the forefoot. Comfort wins out here too, with some acceptable compromises on performance.
