Intro
Last year Tecnica made an extraordinary debut in the lightweight boot sector, taking full advantage of their experience with the Zero G in the tour segment. But the Peak series, in its various iterations, is distinguished by a reduction of over 300 g (just over half a pound), weighing in at just under the stated one kilo (2.2 pounds) for the 26.5 size. Despite this, it lacks nothing and hasn't compromised on performance.
Walking
If there was one word to describe this boot, it would be balance. You notice it even before clicking into skis: the gait cycle feels excellent, swift and responsive, with great fore and aft ankle freedom of movement, yet not excessively so as it does also provide a certain degree of support. Weak ankles can proceed with the buckle closed and the ski/walk mechanism open at difficult sections when you need to use your edges. The liner padding covers the ankle bones well.
Lab
Entry is smooth for a technical boot, but also in general. Same goes for the exit, just tip the cuff back. Boot closure is intuitive but correct attachment of the cable to the catch can be a bit fiddly (the pull loops on the buckle cables are a nice touch). The fit is well crafted with all sections nicely balanced. It’s more forgiving than in the F1 series, with which it’s a direct competitor. Bootfitting is possible for those with delicate feet.
Skiing
For powerful skiers, on powerful skis. The flex feels nice and progressive, but suitable for people who like to drive their skis hard. With a more central stance and a less powerful drive, it works well on 90 mm skis weighing around 1,400 grams (3 lbs.). On the edge it's highly reactive, and there's lots of rear support. It's a boot that gives as good as it gets. At the same time, it's one of the most comfortable and well-balanced in its class. The liner foam is robust, but cozier and more flexible than the average. The instep is securely held, much as if there was a 45° buckle, less so the heel and the Achilles: it’s worth having the liner thermoformed by a good bootfitter—one who knows how to create a good snug fit for the heel pocket and Achilles tendon.
