Intro
From Atomic's lightweight range, just below the Backland Ultimate comes the tried and tested Backland Carbon UL. It has the same carbon cuff and carbon-loaded PA shell, but with a BOA dial instead of a buckle on the shell and a thick Velcro buckle strap on the cuff instead of the race-ready system with cable connected to the ski/walk mechanism. These different features, plus the extra 300 g (0.6 lbs.) in weight, highlight the different goals of these boots.
Walking
In walk mode it almost feels like a race boot, with more range of motion than even your own ankle to the fore, and lots of freedom to the aft. There's close to zero friction, except the natural deformation of the soft liner. Walkability is seriously good, and it provides enough support for almost everyone, even on the edge, where it can help to walk with the Velcro closed to increase efficiency. The toe of the boot is visible enough to lean into the edge.
Lab
Simplicity is everything. The Backland Carbon UL is almost spartan in its practical, fast, intuitive functionality. But it works well. Entry is a piece of cake; it almost feels like putting on a Tour boot it's so easy. Both the BOA (which efficiently and uniformly closes the shell) and the wide buckle strap are instinctive and easy to manage with gloves on. Once you're in, it's a comfortable fit, though better for high-volume feet as your toes in particular have a lot of space above them.
Skiing
The mix of the uniform wrapping of the foot thanks to the BOA, the stiffness of the carbon cuff with PA flap, and the thick buckle strap, all combine to create a pleasing amount of flex. To find the right amount of progressive flex, we recommend you attach the Velcro pad that comes with the boot in between the liner tongue and the cuff flap. The liner foam is comfortable yet firm. In descent it is fairly precise, yet comfortable. Leaving to one side its responsiveness: don't choose it on the basis of its edge grip, but the overall approach geared towards comfort, which position it just below the best in the category. The rearward support is good, it works well with lightweight, oversized skis.
