Intro
Light even for its category, this ski is part of Hagan's Tour Professional Ultra line, which also includes the Ultra 65 race model, and others measuring 79 and 89 mm underfoot. It shares the same shape as the Core Carbon 84, the difference lies in the materials used. In this model, the more substantial, responsive carob is used in place of smoother, more pliant poplar, which allows for the 150 g difference in weight between the two. That's why the Ultra 84 is to all intents and purposes a fast & light ski, for long verticals and stress-free ascents, where the focus is very much on efficiency.
On the snow
It does everything pretty well, without standing out for anything in particular. This is a versatile ski designed to rack up plenty of vertical out in the backcountry, including more technical routes. It's not an immediate ski, taking a few turns to get used to, but from then on there are no nasty surprises in store. It initiates and releases turns easily, responds to your commands, closes tight arcs and is unafraid of gathering speed and wider turns, considering that the tip is light and if you hit the gas it suffers a little. To compare it to other models of around the same width, it's damper than the Salomon 86 Pro and the Dynastar M-Tour 85, which both have a little more pop, and less so than the Atomic Backland 86 UL. You can feel the lightweight responsiveness of the carob and the twitchiness of the carbon, but it's not distracting, even on hard terrain, where you need to know how to handle it, like with all light skis.
