    Intro
In the Dynafit range, the Mezzalama comes just below the DNA. It shares the same shape and overall ethos but is made from different materials and has a different liner. Unlike the DNA it doesn't have a carbon cuff, which has instead been reinforced with carbon fiber; while the shell is reinforced with fiberglass, not carbon fiber. It positions itself halfway between pure race and speed touring, a segment the Italian ski maker calls adventure racing.

    Walking
Walking is easy, but not quite at the level of pure race boots due to the high liner tongue that stops forward flexion at a certain point, though there is good, frictionless range of movement. The liner also comes up high at the back. The Twistfit spinner closes well (to compare it with the Alien 1.0: it closes better around the dial, while the Scarpa model is more uniform across the foot). The sole is fairly flat when walking.

    Lab
You need to learn how to regulate the cuff, which is often the case for race, or race-derived, mechanisms. The lace system with cinch means you have to really tighten it to hold your shin in place, making it harder to operate the ski/walk mechanism, which becomes a little stiff. Once you make your adjustments, however, it's comfortable and easy to put on. The heel is held firmly in place while there is room up front.

    Skiing
The high tongue with the right mix of support and comfort, together with the smooth, progressive flex of the carbon and fiberglass loaded Grilamid, create a downhill experience to satisfy both expert and intermediate skiers. The superior comfort compared to the average in this segment is a godsend for light use or for less weight-conscious outings, especially when the temperature drops, as the higher volume aids circulation in the foot. The combination of forward lean and the position of the pivot on the shell favors a less upright stance.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.

Intro
Boards, boots, and bindings for splitboarding

Materials are evolving, which is increasing the opportunities for pushing the boundaries of mountaineering splitboarding. It’s no longer just about easy tours, a few jumps and a beer. Thanks to innovative new setups and growing knowledge within the community, long ascents and steep terrain no longer intimidate.

Intro
Skimo bindings

They’re probably the element of your setup that’s evolved the most and seen the most crossover between disciplines. Which is why in general lighter bindings have adapted to make allowances for the trend for opting for wider skis, with hybrid drilling patterns and a greater selection of ski brakes. But the aspect that requires most scrutiny is the height difference between the front and rear pins.
