Intro
A bona fide icon of skimo racing. Under a fresh new topsheet beats the same heart, starting with Dynastar's traditional sandwich construction that, unlike its competitors, doesn't use wood but Microcell foam between layers of carbon. It's still the same ski that has been our top pick for years now, from the classic shape to the reassuring feeling it gives you wherever you may be on the mountain. Designed to reward good technique and well-trained skiers.

On the snow
Success ultimately comes down to balance. And by success we don't just mean at the finish line, but in a commercial sense. For years now, Dynastar has been marketing what is basically the same ski, yet to this day it remains unequaled. No other model is as universal. It's excellent for top athletes, who can get the most from it without tiring, for maximum efficiency in competition. But it's also great for less skilled skiers, who may not realize its full potential, but whom it does help nonetheless. It accelerates when possible, and makes life easier on tricky terrain. The truly hard part (from a design perspective) is not making an easy product banal, and at Dynastar HQ they've managed this brilliantly. It's intuitive, reliable and direct, with the right amount of responsiveness and pop, but at the same time predictable and reassuring. This year it even seemed more buttery in the tail. A versatile, performance-focused race ski, for those at the head and in the middle of the pack. It's still the best.

Lab
The base is convex in parts, concave in others, still not perfectly flat after 10 passes through the machine. Mediocre structure with smooth border, lots of wax. Good edges: 1.5 x 1.5 mm at 88.8°, base edge 1°, scuffed at the tip and tail, the base is badly finished at the tip. Inconsistent edges, need fixing.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.

Split All Mountain
Intro
Boards, boots, and bindings for splitboarding

Materials are evolving, which is increasing the opportunities for pushing the boundaries of mountaineering splitboarding. It’s no longer just about easy tours, a few jumps and a beer. Thanks to innovative new setups and growing knowledge within the community, long ascents and steep terrain no longer intimidate.

Intro
Skimo bindings

They’re probably the element of your setup that’s evolved the most and seen the most crossover between disciplines. Which is why in general lighter bindings have adapted to make allowances for the trend for opting for wider skis, with hybrid drilling patterns and a greater selection of ski brakes. But the aspect that requires most scrutiny is the height difference between the front and rear pins.
