Intro
The new version of the La Sportiva semi-carbon boot is the most race-oriented of the semi-carbon boots in the range, as well as being the lightest. Its racing genes are revealed by the ski/walk mechanism derived from the Stratos VI and the excellent forward ROM. Made from Grilamid and carbon fiber, it's a lightweight, high-performance race model through-and-through, though less extreme than its older sibling, which is up there with the best for unbeatable performance.
Walking
With its superior range of motion, this boot leads the way in terms of forward flexion in a semi-carbon boot, while it is more limited in the other direction: worth bearing in mind when you're tearing towards the finish line. It offers a comfortable stride that is fairly short, fast and fluid. The density of the foam liner is such that you can lose a little sensitivity, especially on technical sections, which is to be expected considering the category of use.
Lab
The liner is stiff, robust and comfortable, a far cry from the thinner types used in full-carbon models. A win for comfort and warmth. The high gaiter closes well and doesn't get in the way. Foot entry is average, it's not as easy as the Alien 1.0, but once you're in the fit is forgiving and also suits wider feet. The closure works well, including the one at the top, but you need to get used to it.
Skiing
The fit is roomy and comfortable, but the precise closure at the instep and calf offers good support. The pivot that joins the cuff to the shell is high up and further back. The LaSpo engineers have found the right balance between cuff and shell flex that results in a smooth ride which could make it a leader among semi-carbon boots. It holds until it needs to flex but does so with control; no stress points or unwanted bulging. The ramp angle takes a little getting used to, it's very noticeable and caused by an easily-visible bootboard if you remove the liner.
