Intro
At just 48 g (under 2 oz) this record-breaking binding is minimalist to its core and an instant design classic. The Slovak manufacturer Grizzly has brought the country's long tradition of mechanical engineering to pin binding design, as well as a stripped-back simplicity that takes the term 'low tech' to a whole new level. While everything that could be removed has been, it's the lateral pin opening in the toe piece that really makes it stand out. It's possible to add a crampon slot (6 g), but not a brake, though Grizzly is working to add this as an option in the future.

Fit
Lateral pin entry means a change in approach, but it's easy with gloves, though not possible with a pole. The brand says it takes 1.5 seconds; we didn't time it, but once you get used to it, it's pretty quick. The simplicity is mind blowing: attach it in just one move, no preload or ski/walk setup. The heel piece, if possible, is even lighter, with one heel raiser flap that sits on top of the pins. There's no lateral release, only vertical, but the stated necessary force is around 14-15 on the DIN scale (though from our testing it was lower). It doesn't meet ISMF standards, unlike the GR 98 which has a brake as standard. That's why we recommend it mainly for the uphill, or for those looking to shave off grams in the single digits outside of races.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.
