Intro
A solid choice for skiers with a racing mindset, even without a podium at the end, or for training, thanks to its tolerant, fluid feel. From the Italian ski maker's large range of race skis, it's designed with long races in mind, for athletes placing just below the very top end of the results table. The Gara's main differences compared to the two WC models are the Liwood air core using a mix of hard, light woods instead of Aramid fiber honeycomb, and an extra 60 g in weight. As with all Ski Trab models, it's incredibly durable.
On the snow
With the mounting point moved back to the standard position last season, it has regained the sweet spot between stability and maneuverability. This helps to exploit the smoothness of the response and that gradualness provided by its construction that swaps aramid for woods of varying density. Altogether it has a more substantial feel. It's supportive, but not overly so, deforms easily and is permissive and balanced at each phase of the turn. The extra 60 g it's carrying are offset by its downhill performance. The ski handles well at slower speeds, where it accepts tail pressure for tight turns. Compared with the WC models, it's damper and more forgiving, though in no way sluggish. It enters easily into turns, takes what it needs at the tip and holds the line, even when dialling up the speed, better off-piste. It can struggle on piste and firm terrain, as it bears little resemblance to an Alpine ski.
