Intro
Dynafit's elite model is unchanged for this season. Compared to the DNA it's stiffer, with a slightly narrower tip and wider turn radius. Unlike its sibling, it's only available in the 162 length, not the 153. Otherwise, it has the same construction and outlook as the DNA, which is more tolerant and manageable, guaranteeing maximum performance on the race track.

On the snow
Despite its overall stiffness, it's pretty manageable on different turn widths, compensating for sluggishness when changing edge with its responsive construction. It can easily cope with large turns, but does require a little more control from the skier at speed. It helps when sideslipping down hard terrain, avoiding the bounce and chatter common with skiers who don't have the strength to flex stiffer skis, but also keeps still when you just point your skis down and go straight. Initiating turns requires good technique and decisiveness, while the free tail allows for easy release. It's twitchier than the Mezzalama, but not tiring. It's less at home off piste, where its narrow width is noticeable, but all told it's a versatile ski, more suited to energetic, heavy skiers. There haven't been any official changes to this model, but, all things being equal, it seemed a little more harmonious last season.

Lab
Very concave at the tip and tail, still not perfectly flat after 10 passes through the machine. The structure is messy, not waxed, no sign of tuning. Good edges 1.5 x 1.4 mm at 89°. Very sharp edges at the tip and tail, rust. Needs tuning.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.
