Intro
In Dynafit's race collection it sits below the DNA by Pierre Gignoux, but just above the Mezzalama. Though the name is similar to the former, it couldn't be more different. Compared to the latter, on the other hand, the construction is identical but the materials are different. The DNA has a carbon cuff and carbon-loaded Grilamid shell, while the Mezzalama uses more forgiving carbon-loaded Grilamid in the cuff and fiberglass-reinforced Grilamid in the shell, for broader appeal.
Walking
The toe box is roomier than the midfoot and heel, which feels good in walk mode. The cuff rotation is in itself excellent, up there with the full-carbon models, but it's a little limited by the one-touch system that doesn't offer a distinction between ski and walk modes, unless you want to reset the cord each time. The easiest thing to do therefore is to choose if you want more range of motion in ascent, or precision in descent, and we're more than happy to compromise on the former.
Lab
Entry is easy for the category, even considering the technical volume. The liner is short and soft (though it covers the ankle bones and Achilles tendon well), with a long tongue for frontal support. The one-touch system is adjusted to either a more ski or more walk-oriented position, meaning that you have either less range of movement or less precision. You need to get used to the slim cord on the cuff; it does get easier but needs to be positioned correctly.
Skiing
The low volume around the heel and midfoot provides precision, offset a little by the roomier toebox, which is welcome on the uphill, but should probably be modified a little if you want to improve downhill performance. The liner is precise and aids power transmission to the edge while providing plenty of rear support, though due to its short length it may dig into the calf muscles. Up front it offers solid support after a moment's hesitation, though the impulse transmission could be improved by a stiffer liner tongue that works better with the plastics, which dig in a little. On the whole it performs well for a semi-carbon boot.
