Intro
At Elan, they love to play around with new ski-construction technology, and their Ripstick Tour collection, which they have been developing with freeskiing legend Glen Plake for a few years now, is a great example. What immediately jumps out is the carbon-fiber bar that runs down the center of the ski and which, on paper, is intended to add stiffness and reduce vibration. It has a flat tail and not much tip rocker. The tip, though, does sport their famous Amphibio technology, so the inside edge of the tip is cambered for greater contact, while the outside edge has more rocker. The ski needs its own skin connector, since the design of the tip makes it difficult to use universal connectors.

On the snow
The only skis that have a left and a right (Amphibio). We didn't notice a big difference compared to a traditional rocker, and we have some doubts about this technology and long-term wear and tear. Always having the same edge that takes all the rocks doesn't seem like the best idea for a skimo ski. Apart from that, the ski is stiff and responsive, as well as intuitive in turns, and its tail forgives the occasional mistaken lean backwards. It conveys confidence, especially on harder terrain, where it gives you excellent edge grip. On crust and chop, though, it's not so easy to release. The central binding could be set back a couple of centimeters, though, if you wanted to improve the ski's performance in rough snow conditions. This would also help in switchbacks on the ascent and in more technical traverses.

Lab
Slightly concave at tip and tail, not totally corrected after 8 runs through the tuning machine. Only roughened, not much wax. Decent edges 1.6 x 1.5 mm at 89.5°, base edge 1.7° (excessive). Finish a bit rough, too much edge at tip and tail, needs tuning.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.

Intro
Boards, boots, and bindings for splitboarding

Materials are evolving, which is increasing the opportunities for pushing the boundaries of mountaineering splitboarding. It’s no longer just about easy tours, a few jumps and a beer. Thanks to innovative new setups and growing knowledge within the community, long ascents and steep terrain no longer intimidate.

Intro
Skimo bindings

They’re probably the element of your setup that’s evolved the most and seen the most crossover between disciplines. Which is why in general lighter bindings have adapted to make allowances for the trend for opting for wider skis, with hybrid drilling patterns and a greater selection of ski brakes. But the aspect that requires most scrutiny is the height difference between the front and rear pins.
