Intro
Wedze, better known as Decathlon, has burst onto the ski touring scene with a collection of three brand-new skis. First up there's the Wilder, available in 85, 95 and 102 mm, all sold together with Tyrolia bindings and matching skins. For the first year on the market they will be available in just three lengths, but we're sure that this will change in time. This is an impressively lightweight ski, especially the two wider models (the 95 weighs 1,240 g / 2.7 lbs.), a sign that they contain a lot of carbon. The classic shape has a long turn radius, shallow rocker and a steep nose.
On the snow
A lot of carbon has been used in the construction of this ski, with everything that entails in terms of skiability. This is a pretty twitchy ski, you need to take it slow, take a relaxed approach and handle it correctly. Not at all forgiving, it doesn't help during turns, the tip and tail are very stiff and if you don't stay centered it'll keep going straight. It's best suited to compact, even terrain, spring firn, or soft groomers; the lack of solidity becomes immediately obvious if you step on the gas and you'll soon take your foot off the pedal. Its record low weight for its category means it shines in ascent. The straight sidecut helps when traversing, and the stiff flex and race-style skin slot at the tip give it the feel of a competition ski. It would work as a second pair of planks, one that doesn't break the bank, for afternoon training and quick outings, as it's more downhill friendly than the average race ski.
Lab
Concave at the tip and tail, flat in the center. Still not completely flat after 10 runs through the machine. Messy, very spread out wave pattern structure; very little wax. Reasonably good edges 1.8 x 1.6 mm at 90°, uneven base edge 0.75°. Very rough finish on both the base and edges, requires tuning.
